Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers to the questions we are asked most about Femmecare, appointments, treatments, costs and complaints. If your question is not listed, please do get in touch.
01General
What is Femmecare?
Femmecare is an independent treatment centre for specialist women's healthcare in Maastricht. We investigate and treat gynaecological problems in women and girls of all ages. With a referral from your GP this is insured care under the Dutch basic health insurance, just as it would be in a hospital.
How is this different from a hospital?
You receive the same kind of specialist medical care as in a hospital outpatient clinic, and it is reimbursed in the same way. The difference is the setting:
- a small clinic, with personal attention and time for your questions;
- one doctor as your lead clinician throughout;
- tests and treatment in the outpatient clinic, under local anaesthetic or with no anaesthetic.
If an operation under general anaesthetic is needed, we refer you to a hospital.
Who works at Femmecare?
Femmecare employs gynaecologists and women's health physicians, supported by our medical assistant. You are always seen by a female doctor. Where it helps, we work with our care partners for psychiatry, psychology and pelvic floor physiotherapy.
Are all your doctors female?
Yes. At Femmecare you are always seen by a female doctor.
I am dreading a gynaecological examination. Can I still come to you?
Yes, especially then. Femmecare is a small clinic with more time for explanation and for your questions, and you are always seen by a female doctor. If you are worried about pain when a coil is fitted, you can choose the Carevix or a local anaesthetic.
Where is Femmecare located?
In Medisch Centrum De Wittevrouwenhof, Wethouder van Caldenborghlaan 43C, 6226 BS Maastricht. The clinic is on the first floor of the lower building (the coach house) on the courtyard. The bus stops in front of the building and there is paid parking around the clinic.
Is the clinic accessible if I have difficulty walking?
Yes. Use the main entrance and take the lift to the first floor. If you need help, please let us know in advance.
May I bring someone to my appointment?
Yes, you may always bring someone, for example your partner or someone you trust.
Does Femmecare work together with hospitals?
Yes. If treatment under sedation or general anaesthetic, or an operation, is needed, we refer you to a hospital and make sure your care is handed over properly.
Is my GP kept informed?
Yes. After your treatment, your GP receives a letter stating, among other things, who treated you and which medicines you use.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. We comply with the GDPR and with the Dutch Medical Treatment Agreement Act (WGBO). We share your information only with healthcare professionals involved in your treatment. After your treatment your GP receives a letter.
How can I see or request my medical records?
You can request this at secretariaat@femmecare.nl.
02Appointments and referrals
How do I make an appointment?
You need a referral for an appointment. If your GP refers you digitally, you do not need to do anything: we contact you within a few working days of receiving the referral. If you have been given a paper referral letter, please contact us.
Do I need a referral?
For insured care, yes. You need a referral from your GP or from a medical specialist. Your GP knows your history and will discuss with you whether a referral to Femmecare is appropriate. Often your GP can also help you well themselves.
Can I come without a referral?
Yes, but then you pay for the care yourself. Without a referral, your health insurer does not reimburse the care. We will ask whether we may send your GP a letter.
How does my GP send the referral?
Via ZorgDomein, by post to the clinic, or via ZorgMail (secure email) to verwijzingen@femmecare.nl. Your GP usually arranges this digitally, so you do not need to send anything yourself.
How quickly can I be seen?
That depends on what you need. Our waiting times page gives an indication for each type of appointment. After your referral has been assessed (triage), the wait may be shorter or longer.
Please note: for menopause symptoms we are temporarily not accepting new patients from outside the province of Limburg.
Can I come if I do not live in Limburg?
Yes. You are welcome for all our care, wherever you live. Patients from across the Netherlands and Belgium come to Femmecare for suspected or confirmed lichen sclerosus, for example.
Only for menopause care are we temporarily not accepting new patients from outside the province of Limburg.
What should I bring to my appointment?
- valid photo ID;
- your health insurance card;
- your referral letter, if you were given a paper copy;
- any earlier test results that are relevant to your symptoms.
How long does a first appointment take?
A first appointment takes 30 minutes.
Can I come to my appointment during my period?
Yes, of course.
Is there always a physical examination?
That depends on what you are coming for. The doctor only carries out a physical examination with your consent.
Can I reschedule or cancel my appointment?
Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand (on working days). If you cancel later or do not attend, we may charge a no-show fee. Your health insurer does not reimburse this fee.
What do I do in an emergency?
- Life-threatening emergency: call 112 immediately.
- If you are under our care and your problem cannot wait, call 043 700 9773 during opening hours. Outside opening hours you can call 043 204 1820 for emergencies only.
- Not yet a patient or no longer under our care? Contact your GP or the out-of-hours GP service.
03Treatments
Which treatments do you offer?
You can come to us for, among other things:
Can my daughter come to you?
Yes. Our paediatric gynaecology service is for girls aged 0 to 18 with symptoms or questions about their body, their periods or their hormonal development.
What does a course of treatment involve?
- Referral: your GP refers you and we contact you.
- First appointment: a consultation and, if needed, an examination, often with an ultrasound scan.
- Treatment plan: the doctor explains what is going on and you decide on treatment together.
- Treatment: in the outpatient clinic, under local anaesthetic or with no anaesthetic.
- Completion: a check-up if needed. Your GP receives a letter.
Will I be sedated or given a general anaesthetic?
No. At Femmecare, tests and treatments take place under local anaesthetic or with no anaesthetic. If a procedure under sedation or general anaesthetic is needed, we refer you to a hospital.
Can I have an anaesthetic when a coil is fitted?
Yes, if you wish. You can choose either the Carevix or a local anaesthetic. Usually it is not necessary: with an experienced doctor the pain is often manageable. Neither is reimbursed by your health insurer; if you choose one, you pay us after the fitting.
What happens after a procedure?
After a procedure you are given advice for at home, including when to contact us. If you have symptoms that cannot wait until the next working day, you can call our emergency number outside opening hours.
How will I hear my results?
You will hear your results by telephone or at a follow-up appointment.
How do I request a repeat prescription?
Through our repeat prescription page.
Can I come just for tests or a second opinion?
Yes, for example for a specialist assessment or a second opinion. You need a referral for this too.
04Costs and reimbursement
Is the care reimbursed?
Yes. With a referral, care at Femmecare is insured care under the Dutch basic health insurance, just as in a hospital.
Which health insurers does Femmecare have contracts with?
Femmecare does not (yet) have contracts with health insurers. A clinic can only enter into them after three years, and Femmecare opened in January 2026. So our care is non-contracted, but it is still insured care.
For your costs it makes no difference whether or not we have a contract with your insurer. Any personal contribution that remains, we waive as a gesture of goodwill.
Do I have to pay the excess?
Yes, just as in a hospital. The statutory excess in 2026 is € 385 per year. If you have not used all of it, part or all of the invoice may fall under your excess.
Do I pay a personal contribution?
No. Femmecare does not (yet) have contracts with health insurers, so your insurer usually reimburses 65 to 100% of the tariff. The part that is not reimbursed, the personal contribution, we waive as a gesture of goodwill. To qualify, please follow the steps on our costs page.
This goodwill arrangement applies to patients with Dutch health insurance. You pay for the Carevix or a local anaesthetic at a coil fitting yourself.
How does the invoice work?
- You receive the invoice once your course of treatment has been completed.
- You submit the invoice to your health insurer.
- You pay us only once your insurer has transferred the reimbursement to you, and only the amount you owe.
- You send us your insurer's statement of reimbursement within 30 days of the invoice date.
Step-by-step guide and worked example · Questions about your invoice: rekenkamer@femmecare.nl
What if I pay for the care myself?
That is possible, for example if you have no referral, have insurance from outside the Netherlands, or simply prefer to pay yourself. You then pay fixed rates, known as passantentarieven (self-pay rates). For more extensive care you receive an estimate in advance.
I have Belgian or other non-Dutch health insurance. What do I pay?
You pay the self-pay rates. We inform you about the costs in advance. The goodwill arrangement for the personal contribution applies only to patients with Dutch health insurance.
05Feedback and complaints
I am not satisfied. What can I do?
Please let us know. We take every complaint seriously and treat it confidentially. An open conversation with your doctor or one of our staff is often the best first step. Your feedback helps us improve our care.
How do I make a complaint?
- Ask for a conversation with your doctor.
- Send an email to klachten@femmecare.nl.
- Use the complaints form on our website. You can do this anonymously, although we would rather talk with you.
We aim to deal with your complaint within six weeks.
What if we cannot resolve it together?
You can call on an independent complaints officer free of charge through DOKH, the disputes body Femmecare is affiliated with. The complaints officer helps you submit your complaint and can mediate. If you are still not satisfied, you can put your complaint to the DOKH disputes committee, which issues a binding ruling and can award compensation.
